Modernism: Origins

With Romanticism still active, a new style of writing started to manifest, known as Modernism. This new movement surged as a response to Romanticism, and its lack of new, great, innovating writers of romantic literature; as well as an overall desire for something new.
Many writers abandoned preconceived notions and American literary styles in general, and started exploring new literature such as French poetry, Parnassianism, and symbolism.

Modernism was born as a more sensible style of writing, based on emotions rather than objective and informative literature, such as Romanticism and Realism. Modern writers desired to express the subjectivity of emotions and a view of the world from a personal, very intimate, point of view.
